Animal Welfare in Greece

Support homeless dogs and other animals in the Kavala area

Hereīs your chance to support animal welfare in Greece:

If you ever have visited Greece - and the area around Eleftheres and Kavala is no exception - you have also seen the sights that make just as a profound and long-lasting impression as any ancient ruin or beautiful beach: The starved, sick and filthy stray dogs and cats.

Animals that are not fed, that are not taken care of.

And not only that - they also risk being poisoned and die a slow and painful death, as often the authorities quick fix to get rid of the stray animal is to throw out poison.

In 2009, the municipality of Eleftheres poisoned 25 dogs to "clean up" the area before the tourist season.

Not only is this a barbaric way to kill an animal or to deal with stray dogs, but itīs also illegal according to Greek law.

The local animal welfare organization Aesopīs is working to provide a better life for the stray dogs and cats of the area of Eleftheres and Kavala.

The dogs in this picture are two of many whoīs got a new life thankīs to being rescued by Aesopīs. Now wonder they look happy!

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

There are several ways YOU CAN TAKE ACTION and contribute to a better future for the animal welfare in Greece:

  • Write a mail or send a fax: Do you feel like spending your holiday money a place where the authorities poison stray animals and even break the countryīs own laws?
You can express your concern over this in a mail to the municipality of Eleftheres, d-elefth@otenet.gr or send a fax on (**30) 25943 50002. (Itīs fine to write in English!)

  • Donate to Aesopīs: Aesopīs is working constantly to feed, sterilize, neuter, vaccinate and care for stray dogs.
Aesop's also attends to sick and injured animals (now collecting money for eye surgery for Matia, the dog on the picture above), and conducts public awareness, sensitivity and anti poison education programs through newspapers, television and radio.
You can donate to Aesopīs here:
(When you click the donate button you are taken to Paypal, which ensure a secure transaction of whatever amount you choose to donate).

  • Adopt a dog: Aesop's continually tries to re-home as many stray dogs and cats as possible.
Many dogs have found new homes abroad, and if you could be interested in adopting a dog from Greece send a mail to help@aesops.gr

  • Buy a postcard: Buy a cute postcard and send it to an animal friend or keep for yourself! Card designer Sarah Galanakis-Moore at nasoupo is donating one euro to Aesopīs for each animal postcard that you buy.
Click on the picture to go directly to Sarahīs shop.
