Facts on Greece

Here are some facts on Greece on stuff you might like to know when on holidays here -

Like that Greeks smoke more than any other people in Europe!

Greece is situated in the south-eastern corner of Europe and borders to Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Turkey. The official name is Elliniki Demokratia. The capital is Athens and the language is Greek, though Turkish, Albanian and Roma are spoken by minorities. The biggest Greek ethnic minority are the 300 000 Roma (gypsies), that mainly live here in northern Greece.

Greece covers an area of 131 940 square kilometers. It looks small on the map, but believe me, distances are loooong. Taking the boat from Thessaloniki to Crete takes more than 24 hours. Driving from Eleftheres to Athens takes approximately six hours.

The population is close to 11 millions and people here are expected to live an average of almost 80 years. The healthy Greek diet is supposed to be the reason that people get that old.

62 percent of Greek work in the so-called services (many in tourism), 24 percent in industry and 14 percent are farmers. Talking about farming: Greece is almost self-supplied with food.
