Greece Flag

THIS IS THE FLAG OF GREECE

Greece flag - this is the official flag of Greece. The white cross on the blue background states that Greece is a Christian nation. Some say the colors symbolize the blue sky of Greece, others that the white and blue are the colors of the ocean and the waves that embraces the country.

The flag plays an important part in Greek history. On March 25th 1821 the bishop Germanos of the Saint Laura monastery in Peloponnese raised the Greek flag, an event that became the start of the uprising against the Turkish occupation. Still, it wasn't untill 1948 Greece got the borders it has today. Today March 25th is celebrated as the Greek National Day.

Private persons would use a more plain version of the flag, a white cross on a blue background, but this flag was officially dumped in 1970, only to be used as the official flag from 1975 to 1978.
