Greek Cookie Recipe: Melomakarona

No Christmas in Greece without Melomakarona! Here follows an easy Greek cookie recipe - you can't fail this recipe for Melomakarona, it's very easy:

  • 250 gram butter or margarine
  • One cup sunflower oil
  • One cup sugar
  • One cup orange juice
  • One cup cognac
  • The peel of one orange
  • One teaspoon clove
  • Two teaspoons baking powder
  • Enough flour to make a dough that is very soft
  • Syrup:
  • Two cups of sugar
  • Two cups of honey
  • Two cups of water
  • The juice of half a lemon
  • Garniture:
  • Finely chopped walnuts mixed with clove

Whip butter, sugar and oil. Add juice, cognac and spices. Mix the baking flour with some of the flour, and add enough flour for a dough that is quite loose. Shape small cookies, the size and shape of a thumb, and cook in oven on 200 degrees C until light brown. Let the cookies cool. Mix the ingredients for the syrup and pour over the cookies. Decorate with the chopped walnuts/clove mixture.
