Jun 29, Sleeping under the stars

The sound of snoring fills the air in Eleftheres these nights...On every balcony or terrace there's a sofa or bed where someone sleeps. One of the blessings of the summer heat is to be able to sleep outdoors! I've put up our spare bed in our back yard, under the neighbour's fig tree that leans over the old stone wall. I just love to lie there at night and stare up on that star specked sky before Hypnos - the Greek God of Sleep - takes me to his world...

Jun 7, They sure know to party!

One thing that really impresses me about the Greeks are how they so easy and unpretentiously throw together a huge party. It was pouring down with rain here yesterday and freezing cold and just as we opened the restaurant a few members from a neighbour family showed up: The son is getting married, they were going to have this huge family party in their yard on the wedding eve, but the weather caused a problem..could they have it in our restaurant instead? How many guests? At least 50, probably 60, maybe 70...

Our restaurant seats 25 inside..and outside we have 35 chairs. Besides, we were not ready to receive that many guests in an hour...

No problem! They just needed the sheltered terrace and would bring everything. And within an hour everything was brought: Extra chairs and tables, table clothes, all the food, drinks, glasses, plates and cutlery. And an orchestra, of course!

I cleared a space in the kitchen and couldn't help but admire these Greek women who in no time filled plates with homemade pies, sarmadakia (stuffed wine leaves), tzatziki and tyrosalata (feta cheese dip), roasted chicken, meatballs and cooked pork. Homemade wine was poured into carafes and in no time 60 guests were served.

And then the orchestra started playing and everyone started dancing..In the rain, but who really cared??

Apr 5, Workshop offer!

Summer is getting closer and now you don't have to choose between the holiday of YOUR dreams and a holiday with your family: Non-participating partner in Pilates and writing holidays will pay only 300 euros, including breakfast while the price for a child who sleeps on sparebed in parents room is only 50 euros. On request, we can also arrange babysitting during lessons.

As some of your prefer not having dinner included to be able to dine wherever you choose or not dine at all, we decided to drop that from the program. That means the price drops as well - it's now 850 euros for the whole week. But remember, our taverna is open and we welcome you!

Dec 20, Christmas time in Eleftheres!

I love Christmas! It's freezing cold outside and a few days ago we even had snow! OK, it only lasted a day, but with the temperatures we have now we can always hope for more. The mountains are white and for those who like skiing we have the excellent skiing resort Falikro only two hours drive from here.
No Christmas in Greece without traditional Greek Christmas cookies - Melomakarona. This recipe is dead easy! I believe each cookie contains approximately 500 calories. So eat two Melomakarona a day and you don't need to eat anything else!

Traditionally Christmas hasn't been a big thing in Greece, but the foreign influence makes Christmas here much like everywhere else. One huge difference though is that Santa doesn't come until New Year's Eve! The Greek Santa is called Saint Vassilis, Agio Vassilis and is actually inspired by an orthodox priest in Alexandria who started collecting money to buy gifts for the poor. The priest was called Vassilis, who's nameday is New Year's Day. Another cute tradition in Greece is that children go from door to door singing Christmas carols on Christmas eve and New Year's eve.

I hope all of you will have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year! And of course, you're welcome to visit us in 2008.
