A Mediterranean GardenMy Garden in Eleftheres
We have been creating our Mediterranean garden in Eleftheres from scratch.Today, our gardens consists of a huge vegetable plot, a small vineyard (Merlot!), some big fruit trees and some small, olive trees in growth...a playground and a chickens shed with yard... It's 3000 square meters and when we bought it in 2001 the entire land was covered in thistles. Under the thistles were a tiny layer of soil and then rocks and stones until China. Wherever you dig you meet stone. Once upon a time there was some stone cottages on the land and abandoned by the Turks after world war one they were left to fall into ruin. Instead of tearing down the ruins (or better - restoring them!) the former owner plowed everything into the ground. The way it was in 2001, when we bought the land with a concrete skeleton for a house on it
Sometimes it does good for your mental health just to sit own and look back. When I look at this pictures I think "hey, we did actually achieve something - I can enjoy a cup of coffee now". Because it's so easy to only look forward to the next job that needs to be done: Some weeding here, cutting back of plants there, planting new trees or flowers or removing dead trees or flowers. The thing about a creating a garden is that it is a never ending project. The journey is more important than the goal. This is how the garden looks today, June 2008.
There was never a proper lay out or plan for the Mediterranean garden. The first thing I remember doing was hand weeding the thistles..I think I actually did most of the 3000 square meters - I wanted the kids to be able to run around here, really feel the freedom of space. Then I went to the county forestry, were you can buy plants really, really cheap (they're very, very small), and planted a row nearby the house, but far enough so the builders wouldn't kill them with bricks or mortar, and some where I hoped we in some future would get a yard. Building and gardening on a shoestring. "I remember how you took us around the garden, pointing into the ground at something we couldn't see, there were only weeds.." my friend laughed this summer - and made me see that we actually have something we can call a garden now.
