Nea Peramos - a lively seaside resort
Nea Peramos is a small sea shore village in northern Greece, situated 140 kilometers (two hours drive) east of Thessaloníki. The village was founded by refugees who came from Peramos outside today’s Istanbul after the First World War and therefore got the name new, nea, Peramos. The refugees arrived at these shores with empty hands and had to build new lives for themselves. Their houses were just tiny stone cottages, consisting of a room or two, with an oven for heating water and cooking in the back yard and outdoor toilet. Today most of these cottages have been torn down and replaced with modern apartment buildings or villas.
Because of the fantastic beaches the Nea Peramos has become a popular holiday resort, though more and more people also find that this area has wonderful qualities for all year living. Tavernas and coffee shops line the seafront of the village. In the summer months the road at the seafront is closed for traffic in evenings and filled with boys and girls, young couples, families with babies and grandparents going for an evening stroll, enjoying a coffee, a drink or a meal with friends or relatives. Though Peramos quiets down at the end of the season, it’s still a lively little village. Here are plenty of shops that keep open all year around.
