Places to Visit in Greece

Places to see when staying with us

The mandatory places to visit in Greece while staying at our small hotel in Eleftheres in is of course the beaches and some archaeological site - make your pick!

Staying on the mainland, in contrast to staying on some small island, also opens up for loads of other things to see and do during your holidays.

I constantly add suggestions to this list - so watch this space!:

  • The main archeological site in this area is Philippi. Only 25 minutes drive from Eleftheres, this is a nice excursion that even the youngest members of the family enjoy - as they can climb all those ancient ruins and experience how even their whispering can be heard at the top seats in the ancient theater.

  • Greek history is also woven into the Bible and Christian history - and while visiting us you also have the chance to follow in the footsteps of saint Paul.

  • A trip to Kavala is a nice break. There are buses from Eleftheres every hour and the 45 minutes bus drive is a beautiful trip itself along the seashore. Remember that shops in Kavala close for siesta at approx 14-14.30 and open again around 17.30-18 in the afternoon. Shops are closed Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday. Local holiday in Kavala (the celebration of patron saints Paul and Peter) is June 29th. Everything will be closed.

  • The huge outdoor market in Kavala on Saturdays or Eleftheroupolis on Fridays is an exotic experience!

  • A visit to the caves of Alistrati should be mandatory. Ok, you might have visited stalactites caves before, but believe me, you've never seen anything like this.

  • Take a walk in the gorge along the Nestos river. Though close to the coast, the landscape is totally different and very fascinating.

  • The Kerkini lake - when was the last time you saw water buffaloes and flamingos? This national park on the border to Bulgaria has an amazing bird life that attracts ornithologists from all over the world.

  • Talking about places to visit in Greece it's ironical to recommend a daytrip to Bulgaria, but we live only one and a half hour from the border (four hours from Sofia and five hours from Plovdid - an unknown Balkan beauty). So close, but so very different to Greece!

  • We look across to the island of Thassos from Kairos garden. A daytrip to the so-called emerald island is a beautiful experience.

  • The neighbouring town of Xanthi is interesting mainly because it's one of the few places in the world where Muslims and Christians live peacefully side by side! You can go by bus, but if you drive you might want to continue from Xanthi to the pomach villages Smythi and Exinos.

  • And from there you can continue up the Rodopi mountains to the village Paranesti - make sure to take a break by the waterfalls and down to the small town of Drama, with its beautiful parks.

  • The Village and Sea Side Resort Nea Iraklitsa

  • The Sea Side Holiday Village Nea Peramos

  • The Pangeo Mountain
