THASSOS - the emerald island

Thassos is right across from Eleftheres, actually we look out at the island from our living room window (and staying with us at our small hotel youŽll have a view to the island, too!).

As one of the larger Greek islands, it is absolutely worth a daytrip during your holidays at Kairos Garden.

The road follows the coastline around the island - driving non-stop itŽll take you an hour to get around, but youŽll definitely will want to take many breaks!

Traditionally, the thassites, lived in villages or settlements in the mountains (highest peak is approximately 1200 meters), while they had a small harbors, called skala for their fishing boats. Now these seaside settlements have grown to big villages, but kept the old name. So youŽll find Kalirachi (in the mountain) and Skala Kalarachi (by the sea), Maries and Skala Maries etc.

Visiting these mountain villages on your trip is mandatory. IŽll especially recommend Kazaviti (and if you get hungry here try the fantastic fasoulada, bean soup, at the taverna on your right hand side when you face the old village square), Theologos and Kastro. In Theologos you might want to eat goat at the Yiatro restaurant (on your right hand side when you arrive at the village).

On your trip around the island also make sure you stop at Aliki. This pine clad peninsula has a marble white fine sand beach with turquoise waters on the one side and the marble ruins of the ruins of an ancient salt quarry on the other side. A walk around this stunning place is absolutely recommended.

Next stop would be the monastery of Archangel Michael. Build into the steep rocks on the southern side of the island, this beautiful monastery also offers stunning views to the ocean.

There are two "towns" in this island - Limena, the capital, on the north side on the island and Limenaria, south east (names meaning port and small port). For many years, before moving to Eleftheres, we spent our holidays in Limenaria, so I have many warm memories from this place. Here are a few nice shops and restaurants - try Panayiotis taverna at far end of the village (when facing the sea, turn right, pass the beach side promenade with all the hotels until you get out of the village and to the beach). Also, GeorgeŽs place on the very end of the main pedestrian street, up some stairs to the terrace, has good food.
