Wine Tasting Vacations

Visit Vineyards and Wineries and Taste the Great Greek Wine

Whether you’re looking for wine tasting vacations or just want to include a visit to a winery in your holidays in Greece, you’ve come to the right place! Eleftheres is surrounded by vineyards and wine producers. Not only that, we are situated centrally in the wine region of Pangeo, the mountain area that according to some myths was the very birthplace and main cult area of the very wine god himself, Dionysus.

Here the Tsikrikoni family has produced wine for generations. Stathis, who is running the family business today together with his nephew Panagiotis and with some aid of his son Theodoris, practically grew up in the vineyards. He tells of how he after school would go on his bike to the fields where his parents where working and lie under the vines reading his homework. That might be one of the reasons why he got such a fingertip feeling for winemaking. Stathis speaks passionately about creating wine and how he instinctively knows how a dash of this grape and a bit of that one will add just the flavour that makes his Sauvignon stand out from the Sauvignon produced by others. He says with a proud smile:

The wine should reflect the personality of the person who makes it!

The Tsikrikoni family’s vineyards are situated in the neighbouring village to Eleftheres, Myrtofyto, on an altitude of 300 meters, but still so close to the sea that the salt and smells of the sea adds a subtle spice to the grapes.

We will start our wine tasting excursion with a tour to several of the vineyards to learn about the different types of grapes and how they grow, and about Greek wine before visit the winery and finally, sitting down to taste the five different wines the family produces under the brand name Gioinos - one Cabernet, one Merlot, one half dry red wine, one rosé and a Sauvignon Blanc. I’m not really sure whether the Sauvignon or the rosé is my favourite on a hot summer day, drinking it in the shadow of an old olive tree, but the Merlot surely made me long for a winter storm, so I could crawl up in front of the fire place. I’m sure the wine tasting will bring out associations for you, too!
